Importing XAVC-S

I recently got myself a Sony A7s (great little camera!) that shoots in XAVC-S.

However, most of the time the XAVC-S files don't show up when choosing Import in FCPX.
If there's no AVCHD files on the card, at least the card show up and I can navigate to the folder on the card where they are located and import them to FCPX directly. If there's AVCHD files on, I have to copy the files in the Finder and then Import to FCPX. Very annoying. Especially since there's alot of xml files also in the folder so cannot just select all and copy.
One time I saw AVCHD and XAVC-S files both showing up! Been stressed recently so can't remember quite the circumstances of that. Have only used one single SD card...

Any way to make the XAVC-S files show up in the import window?

First you can go to the Sony official website to download the plug in to help you. It's free and most of the time , it can solve those XAVC problem.
But sometimes the plug in just goes wrong without any reason. So you need to search for the third-party software.
Here is an blog I found if this can do some help.
Natively Edit Sony PXW-X500 XAVC in FCP X on Yosemite/Mavericks

It may seems no related to your problem, but I hope it would shed some light in your problem.
Good luck ! :)

Note that this is different from a newer codec on some newer Sony cameras (X70) and newer firmware on other models. Sometimes called XAVC-L, that cannot be imported by FCPX directly yet but word is that Sony will have a plugin for FCPX in December. Ironically, those clips cannot even be imported directly into Vegas at the moment!

There *is* a Sony utility that will transcode the clips to ProRes, but the free version is very limited and tedious, and the good version is $200! But, again, should be a plugin soon.

Hi, I have the a7s too and I have no problem importing the XAVC-S files. They are H264 encoded in an mp4 container at 50 to 100mb/sec. FCPX doesn't need any plug in or transcoding for them.
From what I understand you need the plug in for other types of XAVC, not for the S.

The quality of the camera and the codec is great!
Alex
