NAS Storage For FCPX was created by kineticstudio
HI All,
I hope I am posting in the correct place.
I'm looking for suggestions about NAS drive storage/ backup for my FCPX systems ( MAC PRO & iMac)
I also want to use the same for my Music work & Library for streaming
Anyone have any advice or suggestions, my budget is about £500
Many Thanks
J

For my home system, I bought a pair of 4-bay Netgear NAS boxes when they were on sale at Dabs, for about £100 each. They're not quick (~35Mb/sec write when accessed over gigabit ethernet) so don't even try editing off them. But they're adequate for archive storage. I bought two mostly so if one dies, I can swap the drive set over from the other. Netgear's hardware does an auto-expanding 'x-raid' format, which is just as nerve-wracking and proprietary as Drobo's system, but very nearly as flexible too. It's possible - albeit terrifying - to yank a drive from the set and replace it with a larger one. The rebuild can hit 18 hours or so and you really don't want a power cut during that time, but it does work.
As a secondary backup, I archive projects to bare drives which sit in antistatic boxes in my work office. I should probably spin up those drives every year or two and rotate the contents amongst the set to refresh them, but I most likely can't be bothered.
