Items to trash was created by woodchip
I have an event in my library that I need to go to trash to free up some hard drive space. When I move Event to Trash it disappears from the library but does not appear in my trash can so it does not free up disc space. Can somebody tell me please how to empty the trash ?

Do you have managed or external media in that Event?
Does any of that media live in Projects that are in other Events?

Not sure what you mean in your first sentence but no to the other one. It is the only event I have in the library which I put in there as an exercise for myself since updateing FCPX . As I dont realy need it and it is about 20g in size I just want to delete it to free up disc space again. Hope that makes sense

What version are you using? How big is the drive and how much free space is on it?

When you imported media, did you tell FCPX to copy it into the Library, or leave it in place?

You may also have "Generated Media" that is eating up all that space, also.
File > Delete Generated Event Files
Be sure you are right-clicking on the Event inside the Libraries pane, and selecting Move To Trash, not digging in the Library package in the Finder.

Import preferences: copy to library location or leave in place? You can't just import. You get a dialog every time now you do it. Are the library properties set to store media in the library or somewhere else?
Try relaunching the application.

Depends where the medua is and what you trash. If you trash the whole event. Yes, close the app if the clips are in the library. The trash function is in the undo queue until you do.
