Hey guys I was wod wring how you all are using events in your workflow. For the last year I have been using pretty much one event and several keyword and smart collections to organize media. However I found that as a project grows and after you build up many snapshots of sequences that performance tends to lag a little bit. I was thinking that this could a result of keeping all the media in one event.

As you mention yourself: it depends very much on the 'character' of your projects & workflows, hm?
For wedding videos, I do have a single Event per client, and dozens of smartlists.
For my sport-reports, I do have an Event per game plus a 'Standards'-Event for the 'packaging'.
For larger, Hollywood projects, you probably should distribute your dailys & stuff quite different ... you have seeen this article?

Hey guys, I have no idea what you are talking about

What do mean by event - one inside a library or a single fcp event in earlier FCP X.
And what is a project? Currently a project is something which relies on events.
And there are no sequences - these are called projects now.

Each production is a Library for me. Events depend on the production. I almost always make one Event only for Project timelines.
Library is your top level media management container.
Events hold related media.
Collections organize that media.
There is no wrong or right way to use these. Figure out whatever works best for you. I know a dozen editors, who who them a dozen different ways, for a dozen different workflows.

Thanks Ben,
I usually find working with one event more manageable. In your experience have you found any significant performance hits when dealing with many projects (seqs)? Specifically I have found launching the library to take longer. That part I was expecting. But also I found the app performs a bit differently. Usually I have a smart collection for just projects and another one for snapshots. It helps for to visually separate the two. In a fresh Library and Event I can be in the Project Smart collection and create and Snapshot. That process goes smoothly. But once many build up I found that if I create a snap shot or duplicate a project, the app takes me out of that smart collection and to the root of the event that it is in. The duplication or snapshot still occurs, its just visually jarring and a little obnoxious. Have you ever seen anything like that? I was also wondering if there was a way to tell FCP which project to defaultly load when launching the library? I have found that it doesn't always load the most recent project, usually an old snapshot.

There is no default project.
When creating a new project or project snap shot, while viewing the contents of a project or snapshot smart collection, I stay in that smart collection.
How exactly are you crafting your smart collection for project snapshots?
If you have a very large Library, you will need enough RAM and CPU/GPU power to handle it. So what are your hardware specs? Be sure your media and Libraries are NOT on your system drive.
There is no such thing as a Sequence anymore, nothing acts like a Sequence anymore. Everything is a Timeline. Each media element is it's own timeline container. Projects are a type of timeline container. Compounds are another type of timeline container. I'd drop the "Sequence" jargon now. I've found with my students, if they keep trying to hold on to legacy jargon, they tend to keep trying to force things to work like legacy FCP, which nothing in X does. Forget everything you knew about legacy FCP.
