Mavericks vs yosemite for FCPX performance

Hi,
I just installed Yosemite on a usb boot up external to see what will work and what wont.

Are there any major benefits using Yosemite over mavericks as far as FCPX/motion are concerned?

I cant really tell being on a usb boot drive (testing FCPX), but the Yosemite UI is so horrible and ugly... its that bad, I will stick to mavericks if there is no real benefit min FCPX.

The bright white dock folders (ones you can create on the right side of the dock) is too much to deal with (view in grid-stack).. also coverflow lost its looks as well and is 2D, no reflection, and bright white as well.
I did get the 3d dock back with a free app, but still the whole UI looks like a 3rd grader designed it.. nasty.

thanks
Kurt

Hi Kurt,

I had a similar reflection when I first launched Yosemite. But after a few hours I got used to the UI and now I even prefer it to Mavericks. I did activate the dark screen mode, much better for my old eyes ;)

At this time there are no real benefits for FCP X on Yosemite. But seeing the gigantic changes it includes with regard to AV/Foundation I am pretty sure the next major update for FCP X will be built on these changes and Yosemite might be required to run the next-generation FCP X. For people who don't like the looks of Yosemite I'msure there will be plenty of free little apps to make it look like anything you wish. It's just looks, after all. The real benefit of Yosemite is under the hood. And it looks very, very promising :woohoo:

Hey Ronny,
I too am using the dark setting. I got rid of most of the bright white, but the 2d still annoys me.. I did the upgrade, and most stuff still works (haven't tried adobe stuff yet however)
I still have mavericks as the main boot os from the internals, so I'll play around a bit more before i decide to clone it from usb over to the internal satas..

thanks

Dark Menus and Dock here as well. Also, FWIW, Pr and AE CC both seem to work fine as well. Do it! lol

These are all steps in a forced march toward the UI design fad of the moment, which is non-skeuomorphic design: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeuomorph

It is true there has previously been periodic over-enthusiastic use of skeuomorphism (e.g, stitched leather on Apple calendar app).

This has created a sense of "one upmanship" within the design community as they rush toward non-skeuomorphic flat design, and denigrate anyone who retains real-world UI elements. Here's an example of a Microsoft designer criticizing Apple: gizmodo.com/5900854/microsofts-windows-8...ly-skeuomorphic-apps

Instead of rationally and carefully excising these elements, a mind set has taken hold that every trace of real-world UI realism must be eradicated -- no matter what the cost. This includes things like color gradients, drop shadows, real-world textures, etc. In UI designer lingo, they disparagingly refer to these elements as "chrome". Some UI designers also feel that the title bar with max/min/close buttons on each window is also "chrome" and must be eliminated.

This has created a situation where designers are "talking past the shoulder" of actual customers as they yell at fellow designers about who is doing flat design better. They are racing pell-mell to see who can flatten their UI the most and remove UI chrome the fastest.

As in all debates there is some logical reason in non-skeuomorphism. In a properly-designed UI, users don't necessarily require the visual hand-holding of a real-world metaphor. Cutting the shackles to that can free the designer to produce a "digitally authentic" interface which is (theoretically) more effective.

However -- in reality anti-skeuomorphism has produced interfaces which many users find sterile, unfamiliar, puzzling, ugly and (worst of all) inefficient.

This design trend has ironically materialized at the very time hardware and software are more capable than ever of showing helpful gradients, textures, etc with little to no performance penalty.

The chief UI designers at Apple and other companies pay lip service to Bauhaus design, which says "form follows function". However their actual implementation of flat UI design often repudiates this. It prioritizes form (the flat non-skeuomorphic look) over function (readability, intuitive elements). In essence, it is a new version of the much-maligned "chrome", no different than other fads of the past like automotive tail fins. It reality it is "chromeless chrome", non-functional flat design elements which adhere to an austere UI doctrine, yet interfere with and obscure the underlying function.

Hey Joema,
With a few words changed in your comment, you described out Govt and its sheeple perfectly
like out little commie town here in AZ that just banned plastic bags... 'we cant have all the poor little rattle snakes get caught in one of them if someone pollutes, so you all must suffer without the most convenient invention since sliced bread'

All adobe seems to work (again I upgraded from mavericks), but getting my priorities straight, most importantly the only game I ever play works as well (ricochet infinity)
