Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell if something is really white in FCPX?

You know like in Photoshop or Capture1, you can hover over white and it will tell you how close to 255 it is - is there a way to do this in Final Cut?

Thanks in advance!

Simon

Hi Simon,

You can use the Digital Color Meter from the Applications > Utilities folder to measure the colors in FCP X.

Here you see the Color Meter shows perfect white for the Solids > White generator in FCP X

Or use your scopes. But that's a great solution Ronnie. Handy for helping to match colours.

on another (German, not that other...) board, I was following a similar discussion - which elaborated endlessly, based upon that 'full well' in video is 255? 235?? ... = according to broadcast standards, 'white' isn't allowed to be 'white' ... which reminded me of my analogue days, with super-white/super-black ... -

I'm preferring the hands-on-approach on THIS board here..
Use a color-picker - match, done, that easy!!
Thanks Ronny!

Yes, sometimes people can make very simple things overly complicated ;)

Actually pure white (255,255,255) in FCP X equals 100% luminance on the Luma waveform, which is perfectly broadcast-safe:

Be careful with using that as a guide though because measuring the monitor not the actual video the way the scopes do.

Hi Tom,

thanks, I hadn't realised that -

The videos don't actually have to be 100% white - its just by monitoring the colour this way we can keep them all consistant! Thanks though!
