Moving Motion 5 into new directory when attempting to open a FCP7 project file? was created by stkirkland
Hi:
I've received an FCP7 file from an agency. They have given me files to insert into a demo reel and some notes about things to cut.
When I try to open the file, of course, it tries to open my old FCP Studio app. I had to find my old serial # and register it again... been awhile.
So, now that's done, I try to open the file and a dialogue box pops up saying something about the version of Motion I have (vrs. 5) isn't compatible with what I'm opening, so I have to move Motion to a new directory.
Tried to move Motion out of the FCP Studio folder, but the only thing that copies is a pointer to the original app... which is still in the folder. How do I do this move temporarily so I can make changes to this old FCP7 file? I know I'll need to use "7-to-X" (which I have) to translate this into X so I can make edits.
Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Hey Sean,
Try this: put the motion 5 app inside a folder to hide it from the Applications folder.
Then drag the old Motion app outside of the FCS folder. If you still get the alias, hold down CMD while dragging the app outside of the folder.

Ronny:
Thanks - I was able to figure it out from a Google search. Simply had to open Motion 4, close it, then FCP7 would open correctly.
On another note... in this project, I'm having to work in FCP7 again... it's been awhile, let me tell you. Haven't worked in this for sometime so having to get reacquainted with it. I'm so used to having things render automatically I'm spoiled. Is there some way to set FCP7 so that when I import things it's ready to go without freaking rendering as I go? If I have everything imported as ProRes 422 will that help? Gotta try... from what I remember that's a FCPX solution because of the way X is built. I wish this was easier. Reminds me of what I love about FCPX.....

To add to what Mr. Courtens said, I have made it a habit to have FCPX apps and FCS apps in their own folders in the Apps folder. It has eliminated these unexpected issues on the machines I still need to have both installed on.

@Darren:
That is indeed an excellent way to keep both your FCS and your FCP X applications in the same Applications folder.
@Sean:
Have you tried the RT settings in FCP7? If your RT settings are set correctly you shouldn't have to render so much.
