Hi, I’m fairly new to Final Cut (I’ve used Premier previously). I am using Final Cut Pro X.

I am using a still image that is approx 4000px by 6000px. I want to start at a still crop/high scale of this image (focus on the face) and have that fill the entire screen and frame hold for 2 seconds. I then want the image to pan to the left (keeping the same scale) for 3 seconds. I then want it to zoom out and recenter the image so I see the entire 4000px by 6000px at fit.

I’ve been trying to make this work using keyframes and the crop tool but have not been successful. Any tips?

Thanks so much!

No need to crop, use the Mask effect with a compound clip.

Do the Mask and movement inside the Compound Clip.

When you want to fill the screen, you can easily change the Scale parameter of the Compound itself.

Ben, just curious. I always do this by just keyframing the scale and position settings. What's the advantage to doing it with Mask instead?

Same question here. Maybe I missed something but for what I understood, wouldn't keyframing scale and position alone do the job?

If you do NOT want to fill the entire screen at some point, and stay cropped smaller than the Timeline frame, while doing a pan, the Mask/CC works wonders.

If all you're doing it zooming and panning full frame, it is unnecessary. Just use Scale and Position keyframes, period.
