Password project a project?

I am a teacher in a high school. I need to have students protect their fcpx Projects created from community fcpx Events to stop inadvertent or malicious alteration of each other's projects

What version are you using? Usually you have s separate user for each period and assigned machines for each period, but it depends on your version and your setup. Projects themselves cannot be password protected.

10.1.2 Well the problem (I think its a problem) would be then that only one user would be to access the Events available to create their own Project, since we are importing media only once. Is there a way for separate users to see the same Libraries/Events?

You have to use external media not managed media. You import the media into a single folder, either on a separate drive or in the Shared folder. Each user has their own library and events that accesses the media in the external folder. Each user's library and evebts are separate from every other user's.

In a Shared Folder, with Read privileges, can User1 access the Events in a Library (in the Shared Folder), mark clips, etc, use them in a Project (in their own user folder), but yet when User2 logs onto same computer also do their own unique clip manipulations/markings independent of User1, and can this all happen without each user copying the existing media files into their own user profile? I sure don't want the same media copied 12 times all over different parts of the hard drive

No. The project has to be in the library. What you're trying to avoid is having all the projects in one library. You do that by having separate libraries and having the media outside the libraries, which only contain symlinks.

Ok btw thanks so much for your help. So I import all the media to a shared folder. User1 comes along and creates a new Library in his own profile. He then "copies" the shared folder events into it--but this doesn't replicate the media, just provides a way to use it. He then creates a project, marks clips, adds to project, logs out. User2 comes along, and does same thing, marking the same "copied" events differently, builds unique Project. Two separate projects get created from the same protected media. Yes?

Let's say you're going get the material into the system. You open the first user, create a library, and in library properties assign a folder in Shared to store the media. You import the media, which goes into the assigned folder with symlinks in the events. Media is now on the computer. Second user creates s new library, assigns the same folder as the location for the media, and imports it from the folder, using leave in place. A&G subsequent user does the same. Each user has its own library and events pointing to the single folder that holds the media. No user can access the library and projects it contains of any other user.

There is nothing that will prevent someone from trashing the media and ruining everyone's projects, but there's no way to prevent that kind of vandalism I don't think, other than maybe password locking the media folder, though I don't know how FCP would like that.

If all the media could be imported beforehand to the designated media folder, then I suppose this folder could be accessed by the students with read-only access, thus preventing them from vandalising the media.

Most of all of the universities I work with around the country, require students to obtain a USB 3.0 external drive, and copy the media to that. Then they can create their own Libraries, etc, and not run the risk of others messing up their work.

Like Tom said, if you want to keep everything on the Mac (I hope not on the system drive), then each student needs their own unique login. The media gets stored in a central Shared folder. Then the students import the media, and check "Leave In Place" in the import window. The danger to this is that if one student screws with that Shared folder, everyone will have media offline and it could become a mess.

It all boils down to, how much can you trust your students to A- not dig around and screw with the Mac's setup, B- learn proper media management techniques in FCPX.

Great thanks to all! I guess I just need to try it, but ideally then I, as sole importer of media, would be the only one with access to the shared folder, and designate it as Read-only (per lichinho) and then instruct other users to direct their newly created libraries to the media there (per Tom). Since the media is not being copied to each user, and Read-only should prevent deletion of the media from the shared folder, it sounds like the ideal solution to me.

Tom: "There is nothing that will prevent someone from trashing the media and ruining everyone's projects, " would this be true for read-only shared folders?

Ben: "and check "Leave In Place" in the import window. The danger to this is that if one student screws with that Shared folder" if they don't check that box then Read-only status would prevent moving the media which is good; what are ways to screw with a shared folder if it is read-only?

Thanks all.

I don't know about the read-only folder. I've never tried that.

If you don't use leave in place the files are not moved, they're copied.
