I still don't know how, but this editor now has two actual, active viewer windows. A timeline view and a clip preview, al la FCP 7.

I must have missed something in the recent release notes, because Apple clearly shows this on one of their graphics…

But I still haven't seen where to enable/disable this?

Window > Show Event Viewer to show it
Window > Hide Event Viewer to hide it
I actually keep it closed most of the time unless I'm trying to match something. It's easier for me to focus with just the one window. I used it more for the Inspector functions than anything when I was in previous version of FCP.

yep I found that eventually. I'm not sure how useful it would be either, but it had me confused for a few minutes that it was there at all.

This feature has been there for a while - it was introduced in 10.0.6, IIRC...
Lots of people clamored for it, but now most people don't use it, or don't know it is there.

Actually, that is pretty cool! I'll use this to get a larger preview when selecting I/O of clips in browser.
Thanks for noticing this.

The Final Cut Pro X User Guide talks about using the two viewers together both to compare clips and to facilitate colour correction/grading. Mark Spencer's new tutorial, Color Correction in Final Cut Pro X, contains three videos on using the viewers together to manually match shots, manually match saturation and manually match to a graded shot.
