Autitions from the timeline?
Probably not but I thought it might be worth asking.

No you cannot create auditions from timeline clips.
But this is easy to do combining a few commands:
- Shift F, to reveal in Browser the timeline clip that you want to add to the Audition. The In and Out points in the browser will match the length of the edited clip in the timeline.
- In the timeline, Park the playhead on top of another clip that you want to be part of the Audition.
- Control Shift Y, to merge the Browser clip with the selected timeline clip into a single AUdition.
You can keep Revealing in Browser other clips and adding them to the same Audition with Control Shift Y.
I hope that's helpful!

The workaround is ok, but it's not so great for something like audio auditions if you've put a lot of keyframes in there, for example. You'll have to recreate all your keyframes. Also, it's a lot more keypresses.

You wouldn't have to recreate it:
- You could copy the clip before creating the audition.
- Then do a Match Frame.
- Add to the Audition.
- And then do a "paste attributes" to that same clip inside the Audition. You would recover all the effects and keyframes.
I like the idea of creating auditions from timeline clips. However, I think it is not as easy to implement as it seems: for example, creating auditions by dragging clips on top of each other is difficult with timeline clips, since it would interfere with basic editing operations like moving or repositioning clips.
Maybe it could work with the keyboard shortcuts:
- Select a few clips in the timeline.
- Press Comand+Y to "Create an Audition" with the selected clips.
The problem is: where would you place the audition? Which one of the timeline clips would replace?
Maybe it woulc be saved directly in the Browser? This last option is not a viable one, unless FCPX adds the ability to save "regular" timeline clips in the Browser (with effects applied, audio automation, etc.) We can only do this with compound clips.
Another command that would be difficult to implement is "Add to Audition" (Control+Shift+Y). How would this work with timeline clips? We would have to select both, the audition to which we want to add the new timeline clips, as well as the timeline clips themselves...
Anyway, I guess that's for the coders to figure out. All that we can do is request the feature and hope they can surprise us with a clever implementation.

It could be as simmple as holding the Y key while dragging a few selected clips to an existing audition in the timeline... or to a regular timeline clip (in this case, the Audition would be created automatically).
This is the same functionality that we have with connected storylines and the G key.
Also, I think this could work well too:
- Press the Y key to open an Audition in the timeline.
- And then it would be great if we could drag one or more timeline clips inside the Audition window.
We can already Delete a particular clip inside an Audition. So why can't we add timeline clips too?
If you like any of these ideas, make a request!!
