Hi :) I am planning on getting a canon 600D and I would like to know if the final cut pro x will work with the footage from 600D. I know the canon600D shoots H.264 video format and I am wondering If I can simply select the footage from the SD card and import them to fcpx. I read some articles on the web and they talk about transcoding the footage to XXX format...But do I have to ? Does it affect my editing experience if i dont transcode the footage?

Thanks :)

EDITTED: Sorry about the confusion. When it meant transcoding, does it mean I have to download a software, use the software and transode my H.264 format to some other formats that fcpx accepts OR I just simply tick the "optimise media" box while importing the H.264 footage from the canon 600D, in that way, fcpx will automatically convert the H.264 format to prores or something like that..?

FCP X will work fine with your new camera. I'd say whether you transcode depends primarily on how recent your Mac model is; most recent Macs should edit the clips natively without problems. However, if you're doing multicam projects, lots of graphics, compositing, grading, you'll probably want to optimize (transcode), which can be done after you import them into an event.

You have several options for importing. You can copy the card intact to the computer, make a camera archive (sort of the same thing, or import selectively (by marking ranges) from the card while in the camera or in a reader.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. Now I know the word transcoding means I just need to tick the "optimise media" option in fcpx. I was afraid that I needed to download some sort of video converter and convert the clips each time before I use them. :)
