Hi.
I have 10.9.4, using the latest FCP. Using an external hard drive with my Macbook Pro. Five minute movie with lots of text. At the rate it's moving, might take an hour - just hoping it finishes. 88%.....89%.....90%....15 minutes later.
What is up? This is so 2009, torture

Are you editing Optimized media, or camera native?
If cam native, what is the coded?
What type of ext drive (FW, USB 2 or 3, T'bolt)?
What exactly are your export settings?
What is the duration of the timeline you're exporting?
What year MBP, RAM?

Yeah also if the drive is nearly full or is say a USB2- this can have an effect. Is this the first time you've ever shared to this drive or the first time it's ever gone so slowly?

Yes on optimized media. That IS new for me, I think. Should I not have that checked next time?
Thunderbolt, plenty of room on external. Full blown 1080 or whatever is the largest, in its fullest. But always much faster.

Some of the titles are quite complex and require heavy GPU processing to render. Which, depending on the specific model of MacBook Pro you have may require a lot more firepower. And if there's less firepower, you gotta wait.

By "plenty of room" I assume you know that 10% of the drive capacity has to be empty at all times. That's not end user usable space.

How is your set-up organized?
Where are Events located, the Library, System, FCPX?
Everything imported or still in archives/card-clones? And where?
How much free disk space on internal drive? it it partioniated? If so, how/why?
High usage of Compounds? Compounds within Compounds?? (compounds are evil
)
'Just' a blazing fast drive (or Mac) alone doesn't guarantee 'speed' ...
(here: MacMini+usb3 drives = export time ≤ project length)
