What exactly are you trying to convert, that FCPX can't do itself?

The only time I've had to use a converter was for h.264 video from DSLR or iphone to get to one flavor of pro res. This was especially true I found with FCP 6 or 7.

I had started using Pavtube, and the MPEG Streamclip.

Working with current FCP X, it was pointed out that you can just import h.264 optimized (or not, then convert during export). The performance issues that occurred with earlier versions seem to be a thing of the past.

Someone please correct me if I'm off here. My fear is that I may be off in my thinking and do 't want to give bad advice.

Jonathan,

You are correct, H.264 playback has vastly improved. And your advice is always appreciated B)

In what direction?

FCPX 'eats' all common recording formats, even 'orphanized' mts (= without AVCHD-structure) find their way into FCPX.

Plus, many material from 'odd' sources don't need to be converted but just re-wrapped, e.g. historic .flv often contained plain h.264 ==> use the free tool Remux, in within a split-second, without conversion you get a useful h264.mov. Useful with mkv too.
To re-warp .ts streams (such as from satellite receivers), there are other demuxxers avail.

.. other way round:
e.g. if you need wmv, only way is usage of flip4mac, you can purchase in many flavors and prices.

etc etc...

There's no universal 'best' tool - depends on topic.

wooha, you picked the most complicated ones ... ;)

For wmv, you have to purchase a license from flip4mac.com first; as any Microsoft product, in comes in various flavors, select the one which fits your needs. And, no, the 'free' playback-only plug-in doesn't work - editing means processing means converting.-

vob is part of a standard videoDVD; in case, it is no commercial = copyprotected disk, you need the 20$ mpeg2 plug-in from apple.com plus Mpeg Streanmclip as converter tool. Or, for sometimes 'iffy' results, you can give the free tool handbrake.fr a try ...

commercial disks often contain a DRM, which asks for 'ripping'; no advice for such workkflows here at this board.-
