How to move Library that uses "leave in Place"

Hi all,
How do people move Libraries that use leave in place media rather than imported into the library?

The libs stay quite small as we have BG render off as most stuff play realtime.

Currently we copy drag drop in finder to the other mac. Edit away ( media drive mounted from server ).

Then when finished rename the Library say MyFCPX-ProjectX_001 to MyFCPX-ProjectX_002 and drop it back in Mac 1's folder where they keep the fcp-x libraries.

Come across 2 issues.
1, If the user is different on the 2 machines once copied back the original editor get a permissions error from within FCPX

2, More worrying. Even if you don't get the error (same user) some of the media thats imported ( Leave in place) on random occasions actually gets deleted from the server! :-/

We have a backup running so we can just replace the lost media but slightly worrying.

How is everyone else doing this?

Do you select all the Events and export XML and import than onto another machine now with latest fcpx ?

If you do. How do you make sure it leaves in place the media because last time I imported an XML it automatically copied all media into the library but we want to leave in place.

Thanks all.

Hi Simon,

You say "The libs stay quite small as we have BG render off as most stuff play realtime." Does this mean you are still using an older version of FCP X? If so I would really encourage you to update to 10.1.2 and you will find that Library media management is so much easier now, especially for shared storage workflows.

From the problems you are describing, am I correct that you are exchanging FCP X Libraries and media between two Macs over a simple GigE connection?

I think it would be useful for you to read this excellent PDF dealing with collaborative workflows in 10.1.2, I think you will find the answers to your questions right there:

No were on the latest version of fcpx

All media is in edit1 room on a raid.

edit 2 just pulls the media over a direct 1GigE connection as the Library uses external media.

When you says "Exchange" I just copy the Library from edit1 to edit 2 as you can't use open them over AFP.

Well you can. But you need to open them over NFS. Quit FCPX. ReMount using AFP then reopen fcp-x and the Library still loads.

As I already expected the bottleneck in your setup is that you are using a simple peer-to-peer file sharing protocol to access external media on a different computer, and not a dedicated media server. If you read the PDF you will see that such a setup is not described anywhere in it. Simply because it is problematic for working with large files and, as you already have noticed, it even can be disastrous. I'm not saying it cannot work, but it's not reliable enough for professional use. You are experiencing the same issues as people who are trying to connect two new MacPros over Thunderbolt for sharing media files (the "IP over Thunderbolt" hype). It simply is not reliable without a dedicated controller and it leads to media corruption and deletion.

So first read the PDF. For only two computers you could easily work with DAS (direct attached storage) for each computer, or you set up a true NFS server using OSX Mavericks Server. If you are not familiar with setting up such a system you should contact someone who does. A real video server for only two computers is not expensive, but it is specialized matter and many things can go wrong in the process. Too complex to deal with this in a forum.
