I understand that it can be done after you bring the media into browser and the Ripple Training recommend the concept, however, by doing so one cannot avoid the garbage media that populate the drive. FYI, tagged rejected range selections after the import can not be deleted in 10.1.2.

This great feature exist in FCP 6/7 both when media imported from tapes and after. Any ideas?

Thanks for any suggestion...

FCP X is not really different from any other NLE when it comes to organizing your media before importing.

When you import from a camera card you can set import ranges for every single clip on the card. You even can set multiple ranges on long clips and FCP X will only import the media within these ranges. Then you can batch-import the selections.

When you have a tape you can create a Camera Archive, then you can batch-import any selected clips from the Camera Archive.

Just like in FCP7 you cannot import selections from a standalone video file in FCP X. But Andreas Kiel has created a nifty utility for FCP X that will allow you to do this anyway. It's called VCC (Virtual Cam Card) and it allows you to gather the video files, from which you only want to import selections, into a sparsebundle. FCPX will see this sparse bundle as a camera file, so it will allow to import portions of the movies: www.spherico.de/filmtools/

Hi Ronny,

Thanks so much for the tips... I'm aware that I can do batch import in the way you've shown me, however, my point was I cannot do tagging during the import, since there is option in import window, it has to be after import. (thanks for Andreas Kiel who already sent me the link for his tool VCC).

Whether you create camera archive or import from SD, sparse disk, the process is simply:

1. Pre-Import: Range select the clips for batch import in import window
2. After Import: Do all tagging; key wording, smart collection etc.

Although tagging during import is not a big deal, however, it's helpful to see instantly what you tagged and most importantly you bring trimmed media to the browser. Yes, you can apply rejects media in browser but the rejects can be deleted; hence you cannot trim the media after import.

Benefits:
It makes easier to work with the tagged clips in 2nd stage especially if you do a lot batch import. Secondly, it keeps hard disk lean as one always get rid of rejected clips.

Many Thanks again for the support..

Of course, having a 'delete rejects' option in browser will invalidate above argument. You have one stop media management once all the media ingested, then tagging/organising become incredibly speedy and you get efficient hard disk space management...

Cheers..
