Still, a bit of interesting news yesterday spotted by Alex4D from a 9to5mac report about Yosemite and 4K Macs and Apple Cinema Displays for the Fall-
9to5mac.com/2014/07/23/os-x-yosemite-pla...inch-retina-macbook/
The interesting bit--
In addition to the new hardware with higher-resolution display panels, Apple is said to be preparing updates to both iMovie and Final Cut Pro to bolster support for editing, exporting, and importing video taken with 4K resolution-capable cameras.
Mark Gurman is pretty much the undisputed king of Apple rumours these days. And it's great to see FCP X get a mention here.
A post-Yosemite FCP X update is a pretty safe bet- whether its means incorporating new features or optimizations that Yosemite brings, OR a UI facelift to keep FCP X more in line with the flattening of the OSX interface.
That said, I'm finding it tough to square the comment above- FCP X has been Retina ready since mid-2012, and it already has great 4K workflows, with great proxy workflow for lighter machines, and great 4K performance with the heftier MacPro. So I'm curious to see what these further enhancements mentioned above could be.
Interesting anyway.

There is still a hell of lot to do in my opinion and I hope now that Apple has settled on the new Library paradigm that they can get to work on making the program more powerful for editing.

We should not confuse functionality with features. The majority of the features most editors really need are already there. Some of them have received a lot of attention and have become best in class, and some of them still need a lot of improvement. I think Apple has been wise to first focus on developing a solid media organization and media management structure, and on system stability and editing speed. Because these are the very foundations of any NLE. If you consider these alone I would say FCP X is already one of the most powerful editing program on the market, especially when I test it against Avid or Premier.
There always will be things that need to be fixed or updated, and unfortunately every new update also brings new bugs. But that's the case with any editing software I have ever worked with. So it is inevitable that we will have one or more bug-fix updates before we may expect a major feature update.
And when that update comes it will be great for some, insignificant for others. When you have over a million official users you also have over a million different opinions on what should come first, especially with an editing application. While keyframing may be an absolute priority for editors working with lots of stills and graphics that same feature is close to irrelevant for editors working on television series or on feature films, just to give one small example. There is only so much you can do at once as a developer, so it will take time before everyone gets what he wants.
FCP X has come a very long way in a very short time, I just hope it continues to grow at the same pace it has been growing until now.

Some of the things that I am looking forward to, just guessing of course is the use of some of the features promised in Yosemite like extensibility, actions, remote storage sync/annotations and easy use of iCloud to transfer 5GB encrypted data.
The extensibility functions being added; I hope fully enabled for all Apple products in updates, might mean the ability to tweak photos while in FCPX, use some of the features of LogicX in FCPX (faders please), and to interface with Motion without having to leave FCPX. Granted when you need to do major work, you would need to open those apps, but I admit to not always opening Aperture/iPhoto/Pixelmator to do a last minute minor tweak if I'm rushed. Much more likely if I can just tweak while I'm editing.
Will this be a part of the new "Photos", LogicX, etc… app(s)?
How about being able to add some additional parameters from motion to an effect without having to open Motion, modify the effect, publish then refresh effect in FCP.
Not exactly round tripping, which I think we still need, but a great improvement IMHO.
Apple is also providing some major improvements with new APIs for app developers and Apple's new programming language Swift will also provide additional interface ease. Looking forward to it.
Will we be able to use various annotation/marking/screen casting/capture apps to make training videos directly in FCP instead of exporting and then marking up? Image being able to do a video on Motion in FCP capturing screen shots from Motion as you make the vid especially for places like here in the forums. Be nice and save time.
Remote storage sync may provide better functionality for collaborative work. Possible to have realtime multi-user interactions? I think Apple already has the technology to pull this off. iDrive (name bugs me) is promising, maybe. We'll see.
Being able to use iCloud for transferring large files is just an added plus instead of the work arounds needed now. Just hit share! Ok, I would like that.
These are just some of the possibilities I see with the announced improvements in Yosemite and to a lesser degree iOS8
Best, Greg

BenB wrote: In current Yosemite developer beta (which isn't the same version as the public beta), FCPX crashes a lot and has a few extra bugs. Yes, a Yosemite tweaked version will have to be released with the new OS.
I've heard X runs well in the Yosemite beta, which I have on good authority *is* the same version for developers right now as the consumer beta - despite what rumor sites are reporting.

I've been running the developer version and have first hand experience with it. We have a beta machine in our studio, we experiment with it daily. Last week we just did a solid 5 days of actual work in FCPX in Yosemite beta, and FCPX crashed a LOT, is extremely slow to launch, it has some bugs yet.

I think, like anything, it likely performs differently on different setups.

If the last 2 years are any indicator, late October will be public launch.

There was a report about the release schedule somewhere other day.

The restrictions I keep hearing are that developers are restricted from posting screenshots or "reviewing" Yosemite at this stage.
I won't argue what's in the NDA- but I think this is a "spirit of the law" vs "letter of the law" scenario.

I suppose I'm struggling to see the downside. Private discussion of where the Betas are at are more likely to warn people off of jumping in too soon as some have been foolish enough to do.
I can't even run 10.1.2, so OS Betas are right out for me!

I think what he's saying is that people with access to pre-release software aren't supposed to blab about that access on a public forum. That was the case when I was in the FCP 2,3 and 4 Beta programs. Since that was 100 years ago, I guess I can reveal it now.

I'm not an FCPX beta tester at the moment, either, so I'm not beta testing it, nor software I'm developing for it.
I will speculate, based on the release history of FCPX being focused so much on media management, that it will continue to do so until FCPX is basically a really nice, modern, media access management tool. Then I think we'll see major editing features explode with the updates after that. It's a thought...

Short version- unless this maintenance update takes longer than any one before it [70 days for 10.0.4] then we should see 10.1.3 by September 5th.
