I got some user questions regarding coloring subtitles.

When working with subtitles for hearing impaired portions of the text have to be colored depending on person, sound, scene description or something else.

There is an ancient and obviously nearly forgotten feature in Color Picker to make that easier.
As everyone knows you can drag colors to the grid at the bottom of the window. But it's hard to keep that organized or to remember which color belongs to which content.

So create your own setup.
It's simple but tedious without programming skills.

1) in Color Picker create a new color with RGB sliders which fits your needs and drag it to an empty row in the color grid.
2) Proceed with other colors and add them one after one to the grid line.
3) Once done switch to the color palette icon in the tool bar.
4) Click the wheel right of the palette popup to create a new palette.
5) Rename it.
6) Now drag the "color square" from the grid one by one (or in preferred order) to the new palette and rename them.
7) You got your own color palette available for the current user which is available in any application for this user.

Note: if you use the magnifying glass to pick colors the resulting color in most cases will have an alpha channel or are in a different color space. It is shown by the little triangle on the upper right of the color display. If you don't want that click the selected color in the color wheel and the alpha will be removed.

Independent from subtitles you can create color palettes for example for a customer which needs to have consistent colors all over the range of documents created for him.
While using FCP X and using the Color Picker the new palette is available at any place where a color could be set.

The palettes are stored in ~/Library/Colors as myColorPaletteName.clr. To make them available system wide copy them to /Library/Colors – in case that folder doesn't exist create one.

As an example here a color palette I created for a German customer.
