HELP! I cannot range select on any media during import into FCPX 10.1.2

Hi There,

HELP! I cannot range select on any media during import into FCPX 10.1.2 although this is a clean install both OSX 10.9.4 and FCPX 10.1.2 on MBPr mid 2012.
I'd the same problem with FCPX 10.1.1 before the recent update, however, the clean install did not solve the problem. The range selection is crucial in my workflow during import because it gives me opportunity to trim all unwanted media in pre-media management stage with all those key word/smart collections etc.
I can't really understand loosing the basic function of range selection or marking I/O on the clip in import window. When I attempt to range select it selects all clip. For example I need only 30sec footage out of 6min clip, it selects all and I had to import 6min useless material. I'd checked the file menu all commands for range selection appears to be greyed out.
I know I can manage to work with rejects and favourites, however, I can not delete all the range rejects from the same clip. (I wish Apple at least would give that option for users like me who have limited storage on the go.
Any idea? I would greatly appreciate for your support on this.
Many Thanks!

Range selection is only available when importing from a camera, camera archive, or camera folder structure. There is a workaround you can do by embedding your media in a disk image.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your speedy answer and clarification!
That'll save me a great hassle. But how do you embed the media to disk image in this workaround?
Sorry, I need to get it right this with other media types imported from external media locations. Is there any file format restrictions for media import to perform range selection?
Many Thanks for the help!

Hi Tom,

BTW, can you do a persistent range selection during import?
I know that it's possible in browser, and find it very useful in my workflow.

Thanks again!

Andreas Kiel has a Create Disc utility that's really simple to use for this. Google it. Yes, selections in the import window are persistent.

Hi Andreas,

Thanks so much for the link and the tool you provide.
Is it compatible with both OSX 10.9.4 and FCPX 10.1.2?
I'll install it and send you feedback.

Much appreciated.. Kind Regards,

There is no dependency from the OS up from 10.6 or any version of FCP X

Andrea,

Re: VCC
I find that It's a great utility, however, it does not allow me to create a disk image on the same drive where I store the media (external usb HD). Is it normal behaviour of VCC?
On reading the guideline, there's no indication saying that the disk image can't be created on the same drive.

Or Am I missing something?

Thanks,
-Soran

Hi Soran,

You can create the image anywhere. Maybe there are some issues with symbolic links when creating the image. So create the image on a another volume first and move it (cmd key down and drag) to the volume.
