10.1.2 Camera File Names
Now, in 10.1.2 it's keeping the name from the camera. But, for me, the name from my camera is useless - it's just a long hex code.
Is there a way to use the old method where it named the files after the date and time?
Thanks,
Chris

Is there an automatic way to do this or would I have to go through and manually rename hundreds of clips?

Go to the Modify menu.
Go to the Apply Custom Name command.
Select the built-in or custom preset you want.
I'd still like to see naming options in the Import window, though.

That's cool - thanks!
Also, have they added a way yet, to modify the names of the clips in the timeline if you changed the names of the clips in the browser?
For example, if I do a quick import (use whatever names for the clips the camera assigns) and then do a rough cut . Now, later, I take the time to name the clips. The clips in my rough cut, still have the old names. Is there a way for the new names in the browser to get pushed down to the timeline?

Not that I know of. You would have to do that manually clip by clip. The fastest way would be to Match Frame [Reveal in Browser = Shift F] and then do a Replace edit.CMessineo wrote:

Once a clip is edited, FCPX creates an "affiliate clip" which is independent from the original master clip it was edited from for the most part. This is the way most NLEs work, with small variations. For example, in Avid, the "edited clips" would always reflect any name change you do to the original master clip where they came from. With other properties (aspect ratio, field order, etc.) this doesn't happen: edited clips and master clips remain independent in that regard.
Having the properties of the master clip ripple through its affiliated clips (edited clips) is something that you want sometimes, and other times you don't. I've been thinking about ways to have control over this inside FCPX:
- The first idea that comes to my mind is to make the "Copy / Paste Attributes" command work from any master clip in the Browser to one or more clips selected in the timeline.
- The second idea is to adapt a feature from Avid called "Refresh Sequence". This is the way it works in Avid: you change a property of a master clip in the Bin (for example, "field order"), and then, you load a sequence that contains instances of that clip and hit "Refresh Sequence" so that all the instances contained in that sequence inherit the recently modified property from the master clip.
I believe in FCPX this could work even better as a clip based command instead: "Refresh Selected Clip/s". You would select a particular clip in the timeline (or several clips from the timeline index) and then "Refresh" their properties so they get the most recent metadata from the master clip they were edited from. A dialog box with options over which metadata would be refreshed would be nice!
This would give you more control than the "Refresh Sequence" command in Avid, since it wouldn't affect every clip in the sequence, only the ones you have selected.
Anyway, just wanted to share some ideas. If you like any of them, please send your feedback to Apple!
