I am working on a video with mostly text, and want to be able to animate it much like this video:

When the "4" slides upwards and the lines extend vertically and horizontally, how could I recreate this? I also like the part at 0:41 where the words are connected by the vertical line. Would I need to download a template? Also, how do I get the vignetting around the edges?

I don't know if the tutorial would help you, I haven't seen it myself, but Ripple Training has a tutorial about Kinetic Typography here:

I think you can make the whole scene with Keyframes and Behaviours from Text, animate it all, and then put camera moves on it. That would be my guess.
The vignetting you can add afterwards, maybe even just on the self-contained movie, in FCPX.

Create different sets of text across 3D space. Move the camera from set to set. The lines you simply animate regular lines. The vignette you'll add to a 2D Group on top of all the 3D Groups you end up with.
