You are misinformed. That said mts is a horrible format and shouldn't be used in production.

MTS files have been supported since 10.1.0. Make sure you use the latest version of FCP X and just import the files. I concur with Tom that MTS is a horrible format to work with.

<tiny voice from the Hobbyist corner> … but it is THE universal 'format' (wrapper… I know it's just h.264) on consumer devices. For goods reasons, Apple changed in some OS-update (10.8?) AVCHD-folders to 'closed' Private files aka pkg, so none of my colleagues do fumble with the internal structure&data.
In my habitat, 'orphaned mts' usually means, someone made a mistake on organizing the raws - stepping-off the AVCHD-structure and getting 'naked' mts is never a good plan. ... for unknown reasons a habitually ritual in the Windows corner of hobby-movie-making.
but… 'horrible' ? …c'mon! ...
We hobby-Spielbergs want to use FCPX once in while too ... :silly:

Tom, in this post you said mts (AVCHD) works fine in FCP X without optimization: www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...5-avchd-vs-mp4#42478
Did you mean it technically works but due to generational loss shouldn't be used for extensive editing?

AVCHD is not mts. Mts is the file type used in the AVCHD format. Importing AVCHD is very different from importing mts files. If you import AVCHD correctly the media is re-wrapped to QuickTime and the audio converted to linear PCM. If you import mts none of the happens, which makes it even more important to optimize the mts media.
