Compound clip export problem

Compound clip export problem was created by Dave_EP
I have a sequence (project) that ends with a short clip generated in after effects for animated text & final title, exported as ProRes 422 and imported in to FCPX.
In the final sequence the AE clip has an opacity change from 0% to 100% for an effective fade to white before all the end titles etc come up.
This all plays perfectly in FCPX.
I then duplicated the project then turned it in to a compound clip to apply final broadcast safe and a audio limiter. Again it all plays perfectly in FCPX.
When I export this to ProRes 422 HQ (and any other) the fade never happens, it's just there at 100% instantly. It's only happening when exporting the compound clip version.
Anything I could have done wrong here? It's really bugging me!

Interesting that if I put the last clip below the main story line and fade the main story line instead it works.
I've done fading like this before and never noticed a problem. Is it something known about or something spurious in just this one case?
I'm trying to figure out what warning signs to look for, since this could have been a much more complicated edit and harder to swap around.

Try putting a cross dissolve on it.

I could do that, but I didn't want to.... I wanted to control the opacity manually.
It works if I put it below but not above. That's the odd thing.
And it works perfectly for playback in FCPX both ways. So why the export problem?
