Problem with Blackmagic Design software/drivers?

Has anyone noticed a problem using FCPX with Blackmagic devices since the 10.1.2 and OSX 10.9.4 updates? I can't even use the timeline! Comepletely freezes the system and I must force quit. I uninstall Blackmagic Desktop Vdeo and everything works perfectly smooth again (except that I can no longer use my Thunderbolt Shuttle Intensity thingy).

I have also noticed that whenever I install Blackmagic Design software it makes it so that I can't even boot my Mac Pro (late 2013) at all! The only way I can get it to boot is in Safe Mode where I run Onyx and delete the boot cache. They have some seriously horrible programmers over at Blackmagic Design.

Yikes. This would be bad news if true. Since 10.9.4 only JUST fixed some serious Resolve render/crashing issues.

I seem to remember issues with my BlackMagic Intensity Extreme after a particular update- but a Desktop video update fixed it.

Go to BlackMagics OSX forum and make sure to let them know.

OK I posted over there. It should be noted that after upgrading to 10.1.2 and 10.9.4 everything worked smoothly with whatever Blackmagic Design suite I had installed at the time. It wasn't until I tried to install Desktop Video 10.1.2 before I encountered the really bad problems. I don't see any archived drivers on their site older and 10.1.1. They used to have them all. I wish I knew what I was running before. Ive had pretty much nothing but issues with Blackmagic Design software since getting this Mac Pro. The first time I tried to install it I had to boot into Safe Mode and repair permissions in order for it to work properly. Weird stuff.

OS X 10.9.4, and the latest BMD drivers, and every time I plug my BMD Mini Monitor in, my whole OS X system goes nuts. Takes at least 3-4 reboots before anything runs correctly. I have always had this issue from day one. Keep contacting BMD tech support, most of the time I get no reply. The one time I did, they claimed they weren't aware of the issue, and I should just update to the latest drivers, which I already was using. This Mini Monitor has been a royal waste of money. If Resolve would run on AJA hardware, I'd have stuck with them.

RATS! Lets see what response you get with your post at BM, Redifer. I'll be keeping a close eye- though perhaps my hardware would be affected differently.

This puts another stumbling block between me and the 6 updates on my appStore icon. 'til then I'm stuck on 10.9.3 and FCP X 10.1.1.

Haven't tried using my BMD hardware since the FCP upgrade, but a tip based on an issue I had previously...

I posted several things on their forums, with no response. Emailed support and had an answer in <48 hours.

Again, I've emailed support in the past, and get either no response, or "we don't see that happening on our machines". WTH?

I'd wager there'd have to be updates coming for both Desktop Video and Resolve 10. If the Beta period is anything like last year, we won't see final versions of Resolve 11 until November. That's a long time for the current version of Resolve not to support the new FCPXML.

The missing archived drivers are for the moment gone. There are plenty of folks complaining about this in their forums.

I love their products, but their support isn't the best.

HI guys,

Here's the beloved archived drivers page for Blackmagic. They didn't eliminate it but they did remove it from their site navigation. update.blackmagicdesign.com/support

Hope this helps.

Hi all,
I just upgraded to Desktop Video 10.1.4 from being on 9.9.3 for a while, and all went well except for a known issue (10.x versions have a problem with capturing 1080p60 video, which only a few cards of their support). I have a Decklink 4K Extreme in a Sonnet PCIe Thunderbolt 2 chassis. I'm on OS X 10.9.4 and the latest FCPX 10.1.3.

I actually made a call into support in case there would be any problems during the update, and they actually walked me through uninstalling 9.9.3 with its uninstaller in the dmg. Then, it proceeded as normal, and did a firmware update which apparently is needed for version 10.x.

Perhaps the uninstall step was important, I'm not sure, but you could try that (and also 10.1.4 may have fixed some more issues). One thing I'm happy about is that it automatically adds pulldown for sources that need it when you're set at 1080p 23.976, so I can have both an HDSDI signal going out to the grading monitor at the same time as HDMI out to a large consumer HDTV.

I am running MacOs 10.11.2. on a new MACPRO and when I installed the Blackmagic Driver 10.5.2. nothing worked anymore.
I went back to Blackmagic Driver 10.5. But I have still problems. After a while of playing over the Black-Magic mini monitor it starts shuttering, although the playback over the computer monitor is stable. So the best replay is without any additional Monitor.

BMD drivers crash FCPX when using the Ultra Studio Mini Monitor and Ultra Studio. The crash is unpredictable and happens when playing, trimming audio and graphics on the timeline. (all the time). Uninstalled the BM driver and no crashes, but no broadcast monitor.

Apple and BMD Please Fix this Bug!!!!

OSX 10.10.5
FCPX 10.2.3
Black Magic Driver 10.6.5

Other older drivers crashed as well.

No problems using the BMD deck link mini monitor PCIe version thru SDI or HDMI. Using latest OS and latest desktop video. We always uninstall drivers (included in the desktop video package) prior to installing any new desktop video update.

The more recent Blackmagic Desktop Video versions are definitely problematic, but the issues seem very inconsistent.

We have two identical i-mac retinas running OSX 10.11.4. and FCP 10.2.3. We have an UltraStudio 4k on one machine and an Ultra Studio Express on the other. The 10.6.4 Blackmagic driver seems fine with the Ultrastudio 4K, but caused FCPX on the Ultra Studio Express i-mac to crash constantly.

We fixed the problem on the Ultra Studio Express i-mac temporarily by uninstalling DV 10.6.4 and reverting to an older version (10.4.3) which works fine. Not really a proper fix, though..

P.S. I’ve just noticed DV 10.6.5 came out on May 3rd! We will test later to see if it is any improvement…

I can already tell you that that isn't working either...
Staying on 10.4.3 for now

Who should fix this? Apple with 10.3 or Blackmagic :)

I can confirm that Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.4.3 is stable, that's what people should stick to if possible. I really wish BMD would prioritize stability, because they create new products and drivers at such a breakneck pace and there are ALWAYS huge problems. I know DaVinci 12.5 is still in beta, but I was working in it yesterday and it crashed twice in 10 minutes! One of those times was just clicking on a bin! It's madness, really, that their BDV drivers have been more or less broken for FCPX for a year.
