Overall this is a typical Apple update, evolving the App and stabilizing the workflows. That is great.
But I have one major complaint about the Import process:
I have a lot of mixed-format, multi-cameras, multi-shooters projects. Some footage comes of XDCam, some XFCam (those need to be re-wrapped by FCPX), some ProRes, some h.264 (DSLR, GoPro).
I usually copy the card structures onto one drive; I then import from there into my lib on another disk..
Since 10.1 I made a FOOTAGE-directory with folders for every camera(format/operator). When importing from a C300, for example, I made a directory for C300 footage, where FCPX put the movs. All pre-transcoded ProRes footage and Anims/GFX/Audio on the other hand where already in their own folders in the same footage directory! For that I selected "Leave in Place" when importing.
This worked great, because already in the import-dialogue I could see which folder I was importing to or just leave it in place. In the end I had one directory with every footage-source in its own folder. I don´t want everything mixed up in one directory! That would mean 10.000s of files mixed up in one place without having any idea what is what, when you don´t have FCPX. I need to be able to see the footage also in the finder in a clear order.
NOW in 10.1.2 this is totally confusing.
I am given 2 options: "In Library" or "Leave in place"...both mean external media in my case?!! And "In Library" is just misleading, when I am actually not copying it into the fcpbundle! I know already now this will cause trouble and people will need to double check and triple check where the media is actually going to.
It is also possible to set a new directory for every import (like before), but this again forces me to jump outside of the import dialogue to set and check the import preferences. This step is unnecessary! Why not just leave the options as they were and create the Library Info next to it, for those projects where I want to set and forget? I am sure we editors would´t mind to have especially such a prompt twice in our UI.

OK, so in the Library settings, you decide where you want you "Media" to be, if you select "Copy To Library" in the Import window.
If you want some stuff in a different directory, do that in the Finder first. Set up your Finder organization first for the stuff you want to keep as External Media. I.E. "Managed Media". THEN you import your "External Media" (Leave In Place).
Personally, I create a Camera Archive of all my cards, in the Import window, and it allows me to specify where they go at the time. Then I simply import from there, either as External (they stay in the Archive), or as Managed.
Seems you're duplicating your efforts. Just throwing that out there. Fill me in on what I'm missing, cause I know there's something here I don't get. My bad.
But I'd think I'd get my Finder folders figured out first, then Import stuff that is to be External Media. The whole point is to not rely on overly complex Finder directories to organize media assets like we were forced to before. Let FCPX's databases and metadata do that for you.

I'm a little confused here. When the Library Properties are set to In Library, it means in the library bundle, managed media. When you select choose the Library Properties displays that choice. That folder choice also appears in the Import window. Because you want media to go to different folders you have to either manually change the Library Properties or move or copy the media to it's final location so you can use the Leave in place option in the Import window.

Yes, Tom, you are correct. When I set a different folder it tells me it will import into that folder, not "In Library". I had that wrong on my initial import attempt. So that part of my complaint is taken back. Should have properly tested this before typing
I still run into the double duty, that when I realize in the import (on the second screen(!) after choosing "NEXT..." that this directory is the wrong one, that I have now to close the Import and set a different folder in the Lib-Prefs. It would have been nice, to leave us the option to overrule these prefs in the import like in 10.1.1.
Ben, I can not sort my media in the Finder, when FCPX rewraps XFDcam or XFCam. It will always copy the .MXF media as .MOV somewhere. So even if I have my original cards or archives sorted, the import will copy media into the folder that I set in the import preference. I am fine with that, but I am complaining that I have to set this preference in the Inspector now, while until now I could overrule the preference in the Import Dialogue!!
All this is minor for many, but when you have lots of imports coming for different events and libraries that all ought to be with external media the current solution is asking for mouse jockeying.....
