I'm not sure how I got stuck doing this in the first place, but wanted to share for others.

Used "open in timeline" on a clip in my browser and applied the Slice X color corrector filter. After I created my shape, I hit the track backwards button and, after a few seconds, became bewildered. Even though the play head was planted firmly in the middle of my clip, Slice X jumped to the beginning of the clip to begin tracking.

Things didn't work out the way I wanted them to. My shape didn't track properly. My attempt to keyframe my shape didn't work. Fitful cursing ensued.

It was only after a break, a little more cursing, and a re-tracing of my steps rest that I figured it out. I plopped the clip down into a project, applied Slice X, and allowed the happy to rise.

The takeaway: don't try to use Slice X on the original clips in the browser. (It's probably a best practice to expand that to filters in general.)
