Apologies if this has been around the block lots of times already, but what are the best de-fish plugins for FCPX? I've just been landed with about 9 hours of footage from a Hero 3+ Black and it's almost all been shot wide :(

CrumplePop?

Fcpeffects?

What else?

Anyone used them on a regular basis and what are your thoughts? There don't appear to be free trials of either one.

GoPro provides a fisheye remover filter with their GoPro Studio free software that you could use to process those clips before you import them into Final Cut. This is another step you'd have to take but it may do what you need.

Thanks. I was hoping to only de-fish what I needed :( RIght now I'm exporting to After Effects, de-fishing there and re-importing. PITA.

You would be able to de-fish just the individual clips you select, but it would still be a similar workflow to going in and out of after effects.

For the $49 I'd buy a plug-in since it would save that much in time and more - provided they work well. Don't want to buy twice 'cos I got it wrong the first time ;)

GoPro Studio is free, at least it was when I downloaded it a couple months ago. I wasn't aware they charge for it unless it's only free to registered GoPro owners, which we are as we have a couple.

Yes that's free, but a plugin for FCPX is $49. Applying that to the clips actually used would be cost effective in terms of hassle and time.

Just need to know the best / most recommended plugins from people who have actually used them :)

Well good luck and post back if you find a good one. PS check out Alex 4D wide angle fix for FCPX. It's a free plugin and although I haven't used it, I'm betting it works well.

I find the GoPro Studio to remove the fisheye with the best visual quality. Much prefer its results over plugins. I've tried a few plugins and haven't been 100% happy with their results. Tweaking seems to always be needed. It is going to be personal preference.

I have found that Go Pro Studio fixes my Black Hero3. As for my Black Hero 3+ Alex4d's Plug in works better. I don't like to do the round tripping with Go Pro Studio. I do like the fact that Alex4d's plugin has several tweaks and you can do it right in FCPX.

Like Ben said it is a personal preference.

I've been doing a test of Coremelt's stabilizer "Lock & Load". It comes with an adjustable fisheye fixer called Lens Undistort that works quite well. My trial period has expired but the Lens Undistort still works. I suspect they included it as a freebee as the other components all show a banner saying trial expired.

Having the undistorted function as a plugin in Effects is very handy.

I've used the FCPEffects plugin. I think I picked it up with one of their many offers/vouchers/deals/whatever. It seems pretty good. I'm not really in a position to recommend it over Crumplepop's equivalent (or vice-versa), but either has to be a better workflow than bouncing everything through After Effects.
  1. FCPEffects' plugin .
  2. Crumplepop's plugin .
