Trimming clips in event library

Quite often I have 2-5 hours long clips in certain event. These clips might have 1-3 hours material that is not needed (fe. second or third camera on tripod, capturing several hours continually).
Is there any way to trim excess material without losing quality. Best would be to be able to trim straight in event library. I guess this is not possible?
What's the best way? To go to original media -folder and open files in QuickTime, trim and save?

Usually I save these events for later editing and this would save a lot of space.

Thanks.

You can trim the clip in the browser by right clicking on it and select Open In Timeline. This doesn't affect the original media, though you could then share as a Master File to not lose quality. If you really wanted, you could then delete the original, but it's not usually recommended because who knows if you'll ever need it again.

Select the range you want to remove. Press the delete key to 'reject' it. When you switch the browser view to 'hide rejected', all the media you don't want to see is gone.

For extreme lengths like this it would be better if you selectively import so as not to waste drive space. It might even be worth reimporting and selecting just the lengths you want to keep and discarding the rest.

The inverse alternative to TGC's idea is to go thru the media and "Favourite" the usable material. Then in the Event filter, change the mode to "Favorites".

Or you could use keywords to do the same thing and apply a keyword called "USEABLE" to the sections you want. then when you're clicked on that keyword collection, you'll only see that material- then you can go on to further apply Favorites as needed.

There's lots of alternatives for visualizing the media you want, and making the rest disappear.
