Duplicate as Snapshot was created by MsJustine
Hi All
I went to duplicate as snapshot, I noticed the counter jump up by 1 count, what I could not find is the actual duplicated project file, so after much searching I found it, is it normal for FCP X to duplicate as snapshot the entire file name, including date and time of the snapshot as a new snapshot?
The file I used, I had to resort to using a snapshot, as the original pre-snap shot named file is messed up.
Original File: Lifted Vignette 13 Jun 2014 2:17:30
After each exercise I created a new Duplicate as Snapshot and the name of the duplicate reflects the new date and time, as I was duplicating the Original File.
Today Monday 23rd June, I found that the Original File was not in the state I thought I had left it, so I used the last dated Duplicated as Snapshot file.. I then did a Duplicate as Snapshot as a backup.
The new file has the name Lifted Vignette Snapshot 17 Jun 2014 1:58:51PM,Snapshot 23 Jun 2014, 9:26:02 AM, Snapshot 23 Jun 2014 9:26:35 AM, Snapshot 23 Jun 2014, 9:27:11 AM, Snapshot 23 Jun 2014 9:31:27 AM
How can this be correct for a duplicate of a duplicate?

Do not make a snapshot of a snapshot. Only Duplicate As Snapshot from the original Project timeline you're working on. Yes, it creates a new, "frozen in time" copy of your Project. Yes, it appends the date and time to the name, so you know when it was frozen (duplicated). But do NOT make snapshots of snapshots. Keep working on the original.

As I said, the original file is beyond repair, and from what I gather, backups self delete, so I had to resort to Snapshots, for safety sake, I snapshotted the snapshot, this caused FCP X to have a meltdown in the name department, something like 8 or names added.
Seemed odd that the original title and the time/date stamps would be retained in the 2nd version of a snapshot.

Backups self delete? I'm not following what backups you're referring to. The FCPX Library backups it does do not delete anything ever.
If you make a snapshot of a snapshot, which is something you should NOT do, it retains the original name. I take "Project A" and make a snapshot. That snapshot's name is "Project A [date/time created]". That is its new full name. So yes, if you make a snapshot of THAT, you take its name, and add the new creation date/time to it. That is not how snapshots were designed to be used. Continue editing the original, the snapshot is your backup. Never edit your backup.
What you probably need to do, are just plain duplications. If you're not creating compound clips or multi cam clips, don't use snapshots.
When you say the original file is beyond repair, are you talking about the original Project Timeline? Did you Mac crash or something? Because the backups FCPX does every 15 minutes never delete.
