Hi Folks,
I have just been shown an issue that a student here is having and I was wondering if anyone has encountered it before and if there is a solution.
He is finishing up a feature edit in 10.1 and is just preparing to send it to ProTools using X2Pro. The project is the assembly of about 90 scenes, each one being a compound clip. Some of those compound clips have split edits - J or L cuts - between each other. When he broke apart the compound clips, the split edits were trimmed back to the start of the video and the J or L would disappear.
I'm not sure if X2Pro requires the compound clips to be broken apart or not, so maybe not breaking them apart would have avoided this issue. Regardless, it's too late now as the splits are gone but I still think it is a bit of a problem. I feel like I am missing something really obvious here as I haven't had a chance to fully examine the issue myself but I would love to hear any thoughts on this.
Thanks,
Richie

Yes, if there a J and/or L cuts between Compounds, which are independent timelines themselves, those cuts will of course disappear if you break apart the CC. Because the CC, that timeline, no longer exists. You'll just have to recreate them at those points.
Would be nice for FCPX to be more intellegent about this, though.
Personally I'd send each CC to PT individually, rather than as one massive, unwieldy collection.

Thanks for the reply Ben,
Yes I imagined that that was the cause, but it is a nonsensical result of what I imagine to be quite a common workflow. There isn't really a reason not to maintain the split. I suppose you are removing the container of the "timeline", which contains the split edit so once that's gone the split goes too.
Interesting that you would send out 90 AAFs, what is the benefit of that approach? Apparently the first AAF went into PT without issue.

I wonder if the split edits will show up if you expand the clips in the TL after breaking apart CCs?
(I always send audio in 10-12 min segments to my audio post partner, and always with a sync beep (2-pop). 82min feature = 8 'scenes', each broken at a straight cut like a movie reel.)

I'm afraid not Gretta. Once the compound clip "wrapper" gets deleted, the info for the split edit goes too. It's something I had not come across before and while it does make sense I think it's one of those things which, as Ben said, I wish FCP would deal with more intelligently.
On the audio comment, would you split into segments for an AAF or would that just be OMF? I used to do OMFs in batches, but is there also a need to do this with AAFs? As I mentioned earlier, the word I got back from the sound mix was that there were no issues.
