"effects mask"??

hey guys,
I'm new here and also not very experienced with fcpx. i have a question that google couldnt answer...

i was wondering if there is an easy way to put an effect only on a certain area in the picture. like masking an effect.
what im trying to do is to create a little square that mirrors the picture behind it....
i've done this by duplicating the clip and flipped the whole copy, then mask it down to a square. this works but maybe there is a plugin that does this more efficiently? there has got to be a way to limit an effect to a certain area? i hope i am just missing something
any ideas?

Can you post an example?

Will the mask be the same shape all the time?
If so, an effect template can be created in Motion easily.
If not, SliceX and TrackX are the way to go.

If you use Motion, you can accomplish this using a Clone Layer that has the effect you want with the parameters you want and position, scale, crop controls published.

What effect are you trying to do this for? Maybe I can make something up for you real fast.

Here is a quick Effect you can use that does what I was talking about with the Mirror effect. Let me know if it works for you.

This is something I've been wanting/needing many times! For example, right now I need to blur out part of the frame. Can only find the censor plug in and circular blur. But both are... circular... Would love something like the masks for colour correction but for effects...

Yes, but they are $99 each.
Would be nice with something simpler as part of FCPX.
