How do I put a large project on dvd? was created by cockneyjay
I'm making something for my family at the moment and I want to send it back to england for them to watch on their dvd player.
The problem is that when I'm done my project will probably be around 3 hours long and around 100GB's.
How am I supposed to fit something like that on to a single dvd?
Thanks,
Jay

3 hrs? Use a double-layer disk. Your DVD authoring software let's you compress your program to fit.
Or are you talking HiDef video? You could compress a h.264 to fit onto a double layer disk with MPEG Streamclip or HandBrake, but the quality won't be anything to write home about.

Jay,
100GBs awfully large for a finished project unless you are sending all raw media.
Are you looking at total size for the Library or export size of finished project?
My guess is that you are seeing total Library size including all unused media files.(?)
While media files off the camera(s) maybe that large, typical DVD or even Blu-rays (BD) are not that large. DVDs are 4.7GB single layer, 8.5GB double layer. BDs come in 25GB single layer, 50GB double layer, and up to 128GB LX-4X discs but not at all common for 3X/4X. Even 3 hour Hi-Def movies are not usually that large.
If I needed to send that size on optical disk, I would opt for Blu-ray disks, assuming your family has a compatible player. Even so, you would need to either split the project or compress it if you absolutely have to send that size file. If they only have a standard DVD player, you can split into extra disks; "Here ends disk 1, please insert disk 2".
Hope this helps, Greg

You don't. Or, say, you shouldn't: with Toast, you would be allowed to downsize the bit-rate, that about 18h of content fit onto a single disk - but would you see anything on such a disk, aside blinking squares?
Split your video in 'acts' - btw, nobody will watch 3h of homegrown video as a single piece. So, my assumption is, your video has some arrangement anyhow (Day1, Day2…, Birds, Bees, Bisons, … beginner, amateur, pro…) Split it there. If you want on a standard single-layer DVD-r some quality, 1h should be the limit.
concerning double layer dvd-r, I made the experience, some dvd.-players don't 'like' them.-
and last btw: size doesn't matter in disk-making, only length..
.. my audience usually falls asleep beyond the 20min mark............ :woohoo:
