I was following a twitter feed on the WWDC when it was announced that there was a replacement for Open CL...I think ..something called Metal (I'm not sure if I have got this correct) anyhow its is meant to be considerably faster than Open CL.

This is for OpenCL in iOS not in OS X.

I think it was Open"GL" and yes for iOS. But I wonder if we may see the new MacMini sporting new A8 Chips with the new graphics architecture, Metal.
There must be some reason why this device hasn't been updated in eons.

but then the MacMini wouldn't be a 'Mac' anymore but a 'stationary iOS device' - missing the advantages of a touch-based device AND missing the advantages of a MacOS-based device = double-fail!
A new, smaller foot-print (TimeCapsule)? Yes.
A new CPU-architecture (plus diff. OS)? No.
... and, hey, how should I use FCPX on my preferred MacMini, if it's iOS-based??? :woohoo:

MacMinis traditionally have been the slowest machines to update in the last decade. Right now the MacMini shares internal components with the NON Retina MBP that still lingering, and likely to be removed from the product lineup this fall.
The Mini is due for some kind of major overhaul, and there's no point in doing that with the current Intel chipsets. When Broadwell is released this fall, and all the other Macs are updated, the Mini will probably get a big refresh.
If anything, I think Metal bodes well for the gaming potential of a refreshed AppleTV.
