Hi dear fellows,
I'm working on the editing of an amateur western movie for the moment and I ask myself how to give it a look of ancient western movies like those of Sergio Leone. Do you have any particular technique ?
Also, there is a gunshot in the movie, twice, but during the filming we didn't have any special effect to make it look like a real gunshot… Could someone explain to me the way it works to make it real ? I wish to have a fire-effect but also a dust-effect (you know there's always dust coming out old pistols…) !
Thank you very much !

Hi Leoter,
for the special look, did you cycle through the presets that come with FCPX yet? There's quite a choice already available!
For the smoke and fire using Motion might be the way. It costs some 50 bucks but is very, very well worth it. Check YouTube for tutorials - a gunshot should be rather easy. Good luck!

Some stock footage places sell various gunshot barrel explosions with smoke.

the search keyword is
muzzle flash
this will bring up tutorials like this one (funny guy AND very informative!)
most tuts are utilizing AfterEffects, but due to the super-short nature of muzzle flash, you should be able to accomplish some nice "bamm!!" with FCPX' tools only: you need at last a still of a muzzle flash on transparent (or black) bg. compose 1-2 frames into your video, apply a masked color-correction (if you need 'reflections' of the light, a Sergio Leone Western is usually in bright sunlight
) ..
years ago, I made this test:
(yes, a Gattling super-soaker :silly: )
gun-smoke is perhaps a lil' more complicated to get ..
concerning 'look':
contrary to actual shallow-focus-look, those Westerns were super-sharp from lens-to-horizon ...those shots from Once Upon A Time…, face super-close to camera, behind: a view to infinity = all crisp ..
