Fading a photo and a clip simultaneously

I have a photo I am using as background for the clip...I want to fade the photo
in and then half way through fade the clip in...
If I put a fade on the clip then it blanks the background photo..
Is this possible or do I need to compile the first fade photo and then add it as background for the main clip?

Which version are you using? Right-click on the transition and make sure it's not set to transition from black.

No matter what I right click on I get no menus of any sort?

Go to system preferences. Mouse. Turn on secondary clicking.

Use "Cross Dissolve" instead.
