MOD file confusion was created by DianasaurBlack
I have some MOD files from a disc that FCPX won't import. In import wind it identifies the files as iPhoto files, if that matters. There is one MOD file from a different camera's disc that was able to be imported, but not these others.
By the way: I managed to use these files before when I changed their extensions to .mpeg and then back to .mod. But when I went back a few weeks later to export to DVD, all the clips were black with what looked like corruption of some sort.
Do I need to convert them to .MOV? I thought FCPX liked .MOD files. Thanks for any help with this.

Only when it is in the original camera card folder structure. You're talking about files inside of an AVCHD or XDCAM or something's card structure?

The MOD files came from a data CD without a folder containing them. I'm assuming the person I got them from copied the files from their camera which I'm also assuming was an SD card-type camera. Now I have these files and a lot of assumptions.
How do you suggest I get these clips to stay in my timeline? Thanks.

Well, MOD is not listed as a natively supported file format, by itself.

I has to be in the original camera card's folder hierarchy, to be recognized. When folks are going to hand me media, my studio has a PDF we give them of what we will and won't accept, and that digital camera media needs to be the whole original card in tact. I've been burned too many times by folks "assuming" everything can read, write, and work with everything else. Like there is some sort of Industry Standards (which today are nonexistent).
It's like a VOB that's not in a TS_VIDEO folder, the DVD player won't know what it is.
You pretty much need to be translate it into ProRes. I wonder if MPEG StreamClip could handle this?

MOD files are sample-based music. They are what the Amiga used for sound. Surely y'all remember the Amiga, right? There is no way any linear editing suite will accept a MOD file. What you'll need to do is find a MOD player and then record it as it plays most likely with screen or audio capturing software. Then import the resulting AIFF or WAV file. Some MOD players may allow you to transcode into AIFF or WAV.
VOX might be able to handle this.
EDIT: Well it looks like the Apple Store version of VOX won't let you transcode songs. But the beta 0.2.8 version I have will. The beta is much better than the Apple Store version. I wonder if Apple made them take out features.

Info here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOD_(video_format)
I've had .mod files from a JVC camcorder and changed the extension from .mod to .mpeg, then converted to ProRes in MpegStreamclip then imported to FCP (probably best to work with copies not originals)

Thanks everyone!
Based on what you all said I decided to change the files into mpegs with Streamclip. Then I changed the extension from .mpeg to .mod so FC would accept them. FC transcoded them from there somehow, and it worked! I even multi-clipped, edited, and am currently burning to disc. I should be home free from here!
I appreciate the comment about clarifying to clients the formats accepted. There are way too many variables to be caught trying to deal with every one of them. Ain't nobody got time for that!
Thanks again.
