Roles have gone blank

I've been trying to reveal Roles on a project and the menu comes up blank. I've attached a screen grab. Tried deleting preferences and no change. When I click the icon in the timeline area (bottom left) the empty menu appears. No roles, clips or tags appear. Also, I can't close the menu. My only option is to close and relaunch FCPX.

I've tested this on various projects where it used to work and nothing ...

Help please!!!

Can we see the Timeline, also?

Very odd. What version of FCPX and OS X? What codec are the clips in the Timeilne?

Have attached a shot w/ the timeline. Another couple of oddities:

1) I keep my Events on a second display which was how it laid out when I opened the app. Now it always reverts to original.

2) While editing yesterday I used the tilde key to do something w/o the connected clip. The cursor icon changed to the circle with the connector icon and the orange background. It stayed that way and would only reset by restarting the app although the rest of the app appeared to behave normally. Restarting is also the only way I can turn off the Roles menu now.

I'm running 10.1.1 on an iMac i7 3.4 GHz, 32 Gb RAM, GTX 680 MX, OS - 10.9.3. Codec - H.264.
