Coping Transitions

Hi there.

Was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to copy transitions. In FCP 7 you used to just be able to drag the effect with the hand icon and just plonk it on any clip. Every time I use command-c and command-v it pastes the effect to the clip on my primary storyline.

Driving me insane.

Thanks

You can Option-drag a transition to copy it. You can also copy and paste if you select the edit point. Click on it or go to it and use the selection shortcuts, [ ] or \.

Hi, thanks.

Tried that but can't get it to work on a secondary storyline.

Are you sure that you're trying to put them on a secondary storyline?
The only reason that I have found for transitions not pasting/copying is when trying to put them on a clip that is not in a storyline (primary or secondary).

Can you take a video or screenshot of your process?

Just tested:
- A transition will not Paste to a connected clip, period.
- You can't Paste to a storyline clip if the whole clip is selected, an edit point must be selected.
- Option-drag works on storyline clips, not connected clips.
- Command-T works with connected clips, automatically turning them into secondary story lines.

Thanks Ben! :)

Will definitely give it a shot - did not know about command-T. Does that also mean you can't lift connected clips with transitions from the storyline?

If you lift from the storyline the transition will be lost.

Hi Tom

I have to actually first delete the transitions before I can lift it and because I can't copy the transitions anywhere I have to re-create them.

This has only occurred because I need to make changes to my edit after a viewing which is frustrating, when cutting it all works perfectly. Reassembling with a magnetic timeline is a lot more complicated than I imagined.

Not seeing that. Select the clip and Opt-Cmd-Up arrow will lift it from the timeline. Cmd-G will make it a separate storyline if you want. You can drag copy or copy and paste to it.

Thank you.

I also figured out a simple but massive thing for myself as well. Someone else might also find it interesting.

You can also merge multiple connected clips together on the secondary storyline (with transitions) and then do all the fancy stuff in one go. You select all connected clips with command then just like with individual clips, command-g to group them - multiple groups become one :)
