Hey,
I'm a new guy here. Been searching for a while to find this question. I did a crop on some car footage to give it a "letterbox" feel and my transitional effects spill into the black border. How can i properly do this so my effects are contained to the crop area?

Welcome, Alex.
Instead of letterbox-cropping the clips on your timeline you can add an adjustment layer on top of the timeline and you do the cropping on the adjustment layer. Then any transitions you add to the underlying clips will be restricted to the crop area.
