Can't Switch to Optimized/Original Media was created by Don Rumsey
Just as the title states. I switched to Proxy media in a project. I went to switch back and it won't do it. All I see is red in every project and event. I checked through finder and see that the original media is still in the libraries. When I click on "Optimized/Original"...it stays on "Proxy".
I also have Digital Rebellions preference manager...trashed the prefs...Nothing.
Rebooted several times. Nothing.
Reinstalled FCPX....Nothing.
Just prior to this I also noticed that when working with some text on a title, the "text", "face", "outline", boxes wouldn't stay open as well.
It seems certain things are not sticking to memory for FCPX.
Does anyone want to tell me what simple thing I am missing. Right now I am dead in the water!

Now I've also repaired permissions in Disc Utility....Nothing
I've also manually through the finder and trashed a few different Preference files...Nothing.
I'm really at a loss here.

OK, try this, just as a place to start. Select a clip in the Timeline that won't switch to Optimized/Original. Right-click it and "Reveal In Browser". When it shows the master clip and used range in the Browser, go to the Info section of the Inspector. At the bottom, the "File Information" block, "Available Media Representation", which has a green circle, and which has a red triangle?

"Original" is green circle
"Optimized" and "Proxy" has red triangle
Also prior to this I followed Apples steps on Totally deleting FCPX from the system aaaand...Nothing. Still does it. Weird!

You don't have proxy or optimized media, according to your inspector. Only original media.

Yes exactly. It's not showing the original either. Actually the switch is stuck on Proxy. It won't switch to original/optimized.
However. This may all be a moot point because before I left for work this morning I reverse cloned my internal with my CCC backup. To which all thanks goes to you Ben on that one as well.

AAAnd I'm home. Everything seems to be in tip top shape after the reverse clone of my back up. I guess we'll never know what the problem was. I just know that I'm getting tired of all the lil bugs for sure. I'm wondering if my machine just doesn't have the horsepower that my skills and creativity and software require.

Sorry you are having all sorts of trouble. What a drag. Know that your results are not typical, sound like some weird stuff is going on with your machine(s).
Corrupted user accounts are unfortunately something that I've seen several times with OS X. Rare, but they do happen. Some times it is a preference that has gone astray, or bad library file that can be fixed. But other times you just have to create a new account.
Without knowing all the details your OS install might be corrupted. You can do a "reinstall" of the OS without messing with your apps and accounts. Here are all the steps:
support.apple.com/kb/ph13871
Sometimes the OS is so hosed, you have to start fresh. Clone your startup drive and then once you erase your disk, manually migrate everything. I know many folks here at fcp.co do this as a yearly cleaning.
BTW. I personally use proxy all the time. Did a project with 3500 proxy files, switching back and fort. I haven't seen any issues.
