HOW DO I GET FCPX TO RECOGNIZE MY CAMERA WHEN I ATTACH THE CAMERA TO THE IMAC HDMI PORT?

Unfortunately you cannot capture thought HMDI, only USB and Firewire.

Blackmagic sell a cute little HDMI to Thunderbolt recorder - bus-powered, you plug in your camera and use their utility to capture footage.

I've found it a bit flaky (it only works for very specific combinations of frame size and rate, without apparent reason), but for demonstrations and training it's tremendously useful.

It won't do 4K over HDMI, though - 720/1080 only.
