I've recently bought one of the new Mac Pros (3.5 GHZ - 6-core - my media is on a Thunderbolt drive)) and I am having the weirdest experience with titles. I find moving titles around is taking me longer than before. I keep getting the spinning ball and I have to wait for it to stop to make changes. This happened once in a while on my old Mac Pro using USB drives (!) but not to this extent. How could upgrading my computer possibly make my titling slower - and I'm talking about lower thirds, nothing fancy. These are titles I custom-created in Motion so I wonder if that has some effect. Ideas? thx

Two questions,

When you set up your nMP did you set it up as new, do fresh app store downloads of all your apple apps (esp FCP X) or did you use migration assistant?

The other question is did you update projects from 10.0.9 to 10.1.1? That sometimes causes what you are describing.

I tried using Migration Assistant but for some reason, I never could get it to recognize my older computer. So I gave up and re-downloaded from the App Store. I didn't want all the apps from the old computer anyway. That's been a bit of a nuisance getting various data from the old Movie folder to the new, but I don't think that's what this is. I have a feeling that creating a custom title I'm Motion and then moving it around the timeline in fcpx slows it down somehow. I'll run a test and create a new project and use one of my custom titles there and see if it makes a difference. thx

I just ran a test in a new test project in the same library and it was still slow. Then I created a new library and imported some of the same footage and added the custom titles and it was fine - no lag, spinning ball. My original library has multiple projects and tons of media, so that may be who's slowing it down.

I've always been importing my footage into the libraries and I'm starting to believe t makes more sense to leave the files external so you don't get these big lethargic libraries. Then when you archive, just make sure the media is archived with the libraries. I'm still trying to work through the best way to do this, but I'm too busy to focus on it for that long. thx

Yeah, that's what I always recommend, it seems to work much better with 'leave files in place' checked in prefs.

The other thing is just like FCP 7 projects, sometimes libraries can get corrupted. I try to make backups of them whenever I've made good progress on a job. It has kept the gremlins at bay.
