Is there a command function that lets the timeline screen follow the playhead?

Only by dragging the scroll bar or stroking the trackpad.

Thanks, pity that would be a handy function.

Agree, very surprised to find FCPX doesn't do this, unlike every other timeline-based app I've used.

I wonder why not?

Because it's awful? :-) Seriously, might be nice as an option, but if you edit "on the fly" during playback, the timeline jumping out from under your cursor is not what you want....

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

Agreed! It's a real pain in the ass to edit with. First thing I turn off with AVID.

It's only useful for playing back long edits when conducting a viewing.
Otherwise just use a side scrolling mouse or Magic Trackpad?

A lot of people would prefer this feature. I would at least like to enable/disable it.

Deciding for me that there is a right and wrong way to work in what is supposed to be professional software is aggravating. Just each of us decide whether to use it or not.

The playhead/timeline follow functionality is useful to me, especially during preliminary checking of material and final checking of projects.

As a design pattern, Apple offers it in LogicPro, iMovie, and Garage Band. Audacity does it, as well.

Now back to endless trackpadding ... :-)

Actually this subject has been debated every month since FCP version 1 was released. Fill out the feedback form, and if enough folks request it, it may become a priority.

Thanks for the info, BenB. A constructive way to complain :-)

We don't "complain", we politely request. More is achieved from a polite comment than from a rude rant.
