'Revert to original layout' can sometimes cure this.

Try this: turn on Event Viewer under the Window menu.

Are you using 2 screens?
I had this with my MacBook Pro last week and I cured it (I think) by pulling the Event Browser back onto the main screen and quitting and re-starting FCP. Can't remember if I re-booted the machine as well so it might be wise to go the whole hog.
Once I got everything playing again I started using the second screen and everything was fine.
Good luck.
Ian.

I found when there's a lot of connected clips, the playback delay and unsmooth timeline control happen.
With a 40mins TV project, the timeline can easily have more than 1600 connected clips.
We always have 8 audio channels, each channel is one file.
So every clip has 8 connected clips without any cut,
and we've developed a software for automatically combining these channels to 1 file.
