When playhead is stopped - the image in the viewer is clean, but when I play the timeline, it appears soft. Export looks fine when playing though, but it's disconcerting when editing as I can't be sure the shot I'm editing is in complete focus...are there settings to correct this? I have 2 brand new Dell Ultrasharp monitors and an Apple cinema display - it does the same on all three.

Is the media rendered? Is the viewer set to high quality playback?

FCPX does in fact reduce the image quality, only if it has to, in order to give you the smoothest playback it can. Type of monitor doesn't matter. What Mac model, what GPU cards, and what coded are the video clips you're editing?
