I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly...but ever since the update to FCPX, when trying to scale lower thirds...all layers under it are affected...thus scaling all images...is this changeable? I don't recall FCPX functioning like this prior to the update.

Can you post screen shots of what you're doing and seeing?

Here we go:

When trying to reduce the size of the lower third using either the TRANSFORM or the SCALE function...all layers are affected.

It will scale down the ENTIRE IMAGE...this didn't happen before.

this particular lower third is a bit large for the image, so I am trying to reduce it a bit to fit into other shots better.

There are no layers. The lower third is a single layer. Not sure what you were using before that had separate layers. If you scale the lower third, everything in the text block, including the background scales. You could reduce the size, but increase the font size.

I think I wasn't clear enough...I'm aware that the lower third is all one element....my problem is that when i attempt to scale just the lower third into a smaller size, the video itself is also affected...acording to me this wasn't the case in the prior versions of FCP.

Reducing the size of the lower third also reduces the size of the video portion.

Are you changing the scale function in the inspector? What version are you using? I cannot reproduce what you're seeing in the current version of the application. I don't think I have ever seen what you're describing.

Once again: what version is this? What lower third is that? Who made it? Let's see the lower third controls. Have you tried this with the FCOP built-in titles?

10.1.1

the maker is Stupid Raisins

The FCPX lower thirds seem to scale just fine.

Don't know what controls the lower third has, but you might need to contact them.

the actual lower thirds controls don't have a scale.

Do the actual lower third controls have a drop zone into which the image is placed or which loads the background into the lower third? This is a problem the stupid raisins have to resolve.

Can you post a screen shot of this? I didn't ask you about the scale function.

Thats normal behavior since 10.0 for several titles – it never has changed.
A title created in Motion by default has a background layer. This won't show up in FCPX, but its there and will affect all underlying clips.

So if you can edit the title in Motion remove the background layer and save. This will bring the "normal" behavior.

Edit: just saw that the title is an FXFactory one. This one can't be modified. You have to contact the creator of the plugin to correct the mistake he made.

I have encountered similar issues with other titles. A little workaround can help:

Apply the title as in your first screenshot. Select it in the timeline and hit Opt-G to turn it into a compound clip. This can then be scaled without affecting the background - at least it helped with my problems so far.

Good luck!

Thats a good workaround!

As said this issue has nothing to do with any version of FCP X and its not a FCP X bug.
It's the way the title is designed.

So if you got Motion and want to create an Adjustment Layer just create a new title. Then remove the "Type Text Here" layer and save.
If you want a title remove the "Title Background" instead.

It is what makes Adjustment Layers work.
