Exporting Video for Vertical Display on iPhone

I'm trying to create an OnBoarding video for an app that plays when someone signs in for the first time. I would like to be able to scale the video for vertical display (as opposed to horizontal) and have it take up the whole screen, but can't seem to find a way to make it happen without having only a portion of the Video displayed on the phone screen (the rest is cut off)

I would appreciate any suggestions, even if it means using Motion to do so.

Was it shot vertically on an iPhone? If it was shot horizontally the sides have to be cut off to make the project vertical, unless you want a heavily letterboxed image, basically the way you see video on an iPhone when you hold it vertically.

Actually, the footage was shot using a DSLR, my problem is getting the larger video size down to the size of the vertical iPhone screen without cutting off too much of the video (I realize some will have to be).

Thanks for your response Tom

Not much you can do. You're going to lose a bunch of video to make the DSLR foot able fill the frame.

yea, if you shot the video horizontally, and then try and put it into a vertical frame, just imagine taking an old family photo out of a photobook that was taken horizontally (landscape), and then you're handed a frame to put it in that only stands up vertically (portrait). You'd have to stretch that original photo and enlarge it to be tall enough to fit in the frame, but then when you do that, you'll have extra space on the left and right sides that you'll need to cut off.

the only way to fix that if you don't want to cut stuff off is to squeeze the photo/video, which will have undesirable effects.

the best thing to do is go back and reshoot this on your DSLR and hold the camera in the same way you want your video to look. you're at an advantage actually, because since you're just using a DSLR, you can use a normal photographers tripod that allows you to swing your camera into a portrait position, so you can have the camera locked down and still record in a vertical position.
