Hi,

I have been trying to put a blur only outside of a shape mask, and haven't been able to figure it out. I'm a beginner, and any help would be great.

What effect exactly are you using? There are Image Mask and Mask in effects. Usually with these masks you use two layers. The bottom layer is blurred and the top layer has the mask. What's inside the mask is clear and what's outside it sees the layer underneath which is blurred.
