I want to insert rolling/scrolling text into my FCP 10.1.1 clips. Is this possible?

FCPX includes a free vertical scrolling text plugin under the CREDITS section of the Titles Browser. There are some other text scroll plugins in the free plugins and templates section of the forum and you can purchase a variety of similar plugins (both horizontal crawling and vertical scrolling) from a number of vendors such as Ripple, FCPEffects, and more. Manifesto provides a free Roll/Crawl plugin that you can get through the FX Factory application.
UPDATE: Drag any of these plugins to your timeline and place them above the clip you wish to have the text appear over, or place them directly in the timeline to have text movement on a black screen.

All I do is create a very tall document in a program like Pixelmator.
Add all my text and graphics to a transparent layer.
Save a copy of the document as a PNG (Keep a master in case of changes)
Import that PNG file into FCPX and then animate it with the transform tools.
Works perfectly and it's easy to control the speed.

Another obviously seldom used method is to create a custom sized compound with fits the count of paragraphs of the scroll.
Then use TextEdit or something similar to create a rtf formatted text file. Type in the text you need (or copy/paste from another text file) and format with tabs, font colors and size.
In the custom compound add a title template which uses only one text entry – like Basic Title. Copy the text of the rtf doc and paste it into the Basic Title. All text formatting is kept and you can add outlines or drop shadows to it.
Then animate the compound.
Unfortunately this method doesn't support graphics.

You can use this text plugin
www.fcp.co/forum/4-final-cut-pro-x-fcpx/...l-like-in-fcp7#44621
and just change it from horizontal to vertical.
