Hi all,

So I've updated to the most recent FCPX and until today had no problem, I've copied a project on to a new shared drive and all seems to be ok with the project and library files, and all the original media is linked and present, the one big problem is that it won't stop repeatedly rendering all the clips in the one project I'm trying to work on that has to be delivered today. All the others are ok. Can anyone help?

Many thanks,

Robin

Did you switch off background rendering in the Editing preferences?

Tom beat me to it.
Preferences>Playback>Background Rendering uncheck the box.
Hope this helps, Greg

Good thinking but background rendering is switched on, which is why it so baffling.

Do you want it to render or not?

"Good thinking but background rendering is switched on, which is why it so baffling."

Uncheck the box to stop rendering.

Yeah that would temp fix it but then they will have to be rendered before export, I'm just consolidating the clips now so hopefully that will help.

In answer to your question I do want it to render, but just the once, as per the norm.

"but then they will have to be rendered before export"

Negative that. You do not have to render before export.

Interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for the tip. I have now switched rendering off so i can continue to work but prior to that it seems to want to re render the whole project every time I make even the slightest change.

Hey Robin,
Hope it is all going great now.
As Tom says you don't have to render while editing and it allows a little 'more umph to the program. Different people do it differently according to editing style and hardware. If you are having issues, then turning may speed it up. It is supposed to be in background, but it still ties up resources so if on the edge, turn off.
Likewise you can turn off color balance, audio analysis, people etc… on import in the background. You can turn them on later if you need. On export FCP will automatically do a final render so export may be a little longer.
With rendering on, FCP will re-render certain clips when you make changes so that may be what you are seeing. Changes to effects, text etc…will cause new rendering to happen, so shutting off background rendering can free up those resources. I like to switch it back on and let it render at the end and play back prior to export to make sure nothing shows up that I may have overlooked. Like little weird one frame glitches.
One thing I noticed that made me wonder, in original post you said you copied media to a "shared disk"; shared how? Is this a shared xsan(?) for the project?
Hope this helps, Greg
